When a yard has a noticeable grade running along the side of the house, it creates real problems - erosion, uneven ground, and wasted space that just looks rough. That's exactly what we were working with on this Clear Water property. The slope needed to be managed, and the homeowner wanted something that looked as good as it functioned.
We built a multi-course block retaining wall that runs the length of the home's side and wraps the corner cleanly. The wall steps up in height as the grade changes, holding back the soil and creating a flat, usable zone right along the foundation. It's solid construction - the kind that's built to handle Minnesota winters without shifting or settling.
On the back side of the home, we added a natural boulder flower bed border that follows the grade in a more organic way. Large fieldstone boulders line the bed edge with crushed rock between them, creating a low-maintenance planting area that doesn't need constant upkeep. It's a nice contrast to the clean block wall on the other side - structured where it needs to be, natural where it fits.
What we love about a job like this is that it's not just cosmetic. The retaining wall is doing real work - managing water flow, preventing soil movement, and protecting the foundation area. The boulder bed adds to that by giving the back of the home a finished perimeter that ties the whole yard together. Practical and sharp, exactly how it should be.
This is a great example of how retaining walls and landscape borders can work together on the same property. Two different materials, two different looks, but one cohesive result that makes the yard feel intentional from every angle.
